The Villa Nellcôte – The Rolling Stones' Basement Studio for Exile on Main St.

The “secret” recording facility was actually a rented mansion: Villa Nellcôte in Villefranche-sur-Mer, near Nice. Keith Richards leased the place in 1971 partly to escape UK tax exile, and the band turned its damp, moldy basement into a makeshift studio using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio truck parked outside.

The location was anything but private – groupies, dealers, and hangers‑on flooded the villa while the band recorded at all hours. The basement’s awful acoustics, combined with the constant noise from upstairs parties, forced them to overdub many tracks later at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. That chaotic, almost feral energy is exactly what gives Exile its signature swampy, lived‑in sound.
