The Weight of Farewell: Why 'High Hopes' felt like Pink Floyd’s real ending

‘High Hopes’ wasn’t just the last track on The Division Bell — for 20 years it was the final original song Pink Floyd released as a band. Written by David Gilmour with lyrics by his wife Polly Samson, the song is soaked in regret and memory, looking back at childhood, ambition, and the slow erosion of friendship. Gilmour’s slide guitar solo, played on a 1955 Fender Esquire, is one of his most emotional, dragging like a slow exhalation.
