The Zabriskie Point outtake 'Love Scene (Version 6)' featured a rare slide guitar part by David Gilmour – why Antonioni rejected it

During the sessions for Michelangelo Antonioni’s Zabriskie Point, Pink Floyd recorded multiple versions of a piece they called “Love Scene.” One of them – often bootlegged as Version 6 – contained a rare slide guitar part laid down by David Gilmour, a technique he didn’t use much on Floyd records at the time. The track has a bluesy, almost country-tinged twang that stands out from the band’s usual spacious psychedelia.

Antonioni rejected it because he felt the slide guitar was too “identifiable” and melodic. The director wanted something more abstract and textural – less like a song and more like a mood.
