For The Wall’s helicopter sounds, Pink Floyd didn’t rely on synthesizers or stock effects. They hired a helicopter, took it to a farm near Britannia Row Studios, and recorded it with a large-diaphragm condenser mic into a Nagra tape recorder. Then they mixed, slowed, and layered those recordings to get the dramatic, menacing sound you hear on the album.
