They trap, test, and map

Public health officials monitor mosquitoes by trapping them, testing them for viruses, and mapping their locations to predict outbreaks.

The actual work is pretty straightforward. They set traps that mimic what attracts mosquitoes — CO2, heat, or stagnant water. The most common are CDC light traps and gravid traps (which target females looking to lay eggs). Some use BG-Sentinel traps for Aedes species. The key is consistency: same spots, same schedule, so the data is comparable.

Once they collect the mosquitoes, they sort and identify them by species. Then the real detective work starts: they grind up batches of mosquitoes and test them for viruses like West Nile, Zika, or dengue using PCR — the same DNA-amplification tech used for COVID tests. If a pool tests positive, that’s a red flag.

They feed the data into GIS maps to see hotspots. Then they can do targeted spraying, public alerts, or preemptive control. It’s not glamorous, but it’s how you catch an outbreak before it’s a headline.

Think of it as early warning radar, except the enemy is a tiny flying needle with wings.
