Think of it as two meals, not one

An overnight train or plane lunchbox should be planned as two meals: a light dinner that won’t make you bloat, and a breakfast you actually want to eat the second you land. That’s the whole trick.

The dinner part is easy: something sturdy and boring. A sandwich with nut butter or hard cheese, an apple, a few crackers. Skip anything with tuna, eggs, or strong spices — you’re in a box with strangers, and nobody wants to smell your garlic aioli at 40,000 feet. Also skip moisture-heavy salads that turn into soup by hour two.

The breakfast part is where most people screw up. They pack nothing, then end up paying $11 for a sad croissant in a station. Instead, bring something that tastes good cold and doesn’t need a fork: a banana, a packet of overnight oats in a sealed jar, or a couple of hardboiled eggs (wrap them well, eat them early). Eat the perishable stuff first, keep the shelf-stable stuff as your backup, and always toss in an extra granola bar — delays are real.

Future you, sitting in a station at 7am, will thank you.
