Think soft, not just small

For braces, soft food beats small pieces every time.

Cutting things into bite-size chunks helps, but if the food is still hard or chewy, it’s going to hurt. The real rule is texture, not size. After a tightening appointment, the whole mouth throbs, so pack stuff they can basically swallow with minimal chewing: yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soup in a thermos, pasta, banana, smoothies. Cold foods are especially good right after an adjustment because the cold numbs the gums a little.

On normal days you’ve got more wiggle room, but still skip the classics that wreck braces: popcorn, nuts, chips, raw carrots, whole apples, corn on the cob, bagels, hard bread crusts, caramel, and any chewy or sticky candy. Soft bread, lunch meat, cheese, cooked veggies, rice, and beans are all safe and don’t require much thought.

When in doubt, ask them straight up what hurt today. Braces pain is personal — some people can manage a sandwich three days after a tightening, some can’t. Packing for the worst day is never a bad bet.

A lunch that’s painful to eat might as well not be packed at all.
