Three compartments is the sweet spot

You only need three compartments in a bento box to pack a balanced adult meal.

That’s one slot for carbs, one for protein, and one for veggies. That’s it. Every “balanced lunch” formula is built on those three pieces, so a 3-compartment box matches the meal structure directly. Rice in the big one, chicken in the middle, broccoli or salad in the third.

Two compartments can work, but only if you’re okay with protein and veggies touching. That’s fine for a stir-fry or grain bowl situation, but it gets sad fast when juicy meat soaks into your greens. Four or more compartments are nice if you’re packing snacks, sauces, or fruit, but they’re not doing anything for “balance” — they’re doing portion control for people who like variety.

One practical tip: if you love a 3-compartment box but also want sauce or a dip, just drop a small silicone muffin cup into the veggie slot. You get the flexibility of a 4-compartment without the extra width in your bag.

Most adults are happiest with a 3-compartment box around 700–900ml total. Big enough for a real meal, small enough that you’re not hauling a cooler.
