Track 1-3 habits max in Q1

The optimal number of habits to track in Q1 is one to three, no more.

I’ve tried the twelve-habit New Year’s spreadsheet. It lasted until January 8th. The problem isn’t motivation — it’s attention. Every habit you track requires some mental overhead. Even if you’re “just checking a box,” that’s a decision point, and decisions drain willpower over the course of a day.

Three is the ceiling for most people. One is honestly fine if it’s a big one like “lift weights three times a week” or “read 20 minutes daily.” Two is the sweet spot for steady progress without feeling like you’re herding cats. The habits should complement each other, not compete — e.g., morning walk and evening journal, not “floss” and “learn Japanese” on different schedules.

Q1 is already rough (dark, cold, post-holiday reset). Overloading it with six habits guarantees you’ll drop all of them by February. Stack the ones you can chain together, and give yourself permission to ignore everything else until April.

Better to nail a few than to half-ass a dozen.
