Track the inputs, not the outputs

Ignore the lagging indicators. For goals with slow visible results, track your inputs instead.

The problem with watching the scale or the mirror every week is that those numbers barely move. You feel like you’re doing all the work and getting nothing back. That’s because lagging indicators — weight, body fat, endurance — respond slowly. They’re rearview mirrors. Useful for direction, useless for motivation.

Instead, track what you can control today. Calories logged. Workouts completed. Steps taken. Sleep hours. These are leading indicators. They change daily. They give you a win or a clear miss you can act on. That feedback loop keeps you going when the big number is stuck.

If your Q1 goal is “lose 10 pounds,” that’s a lagging number. Break it down into “hit 4 gym sessions per week” and “stay under 2,000 calories 6 days out of 7.” Now your tracking shows you winning or losing every week, not every quarter. Motivation follows action, not the other way around.

The scale lies. Your streak doesn’t.
