Track your habit after the first routine, not before

Tracking a habit immediately after waking can backfire because you’re still half-asleep and your willpower reserves are at zero — you’re basically hoping autopilot will save you, but it won’t.

The edge cases are pretty specific but common. If your wake-up time changes (weekends, travel, late nights), the “right after waking” anchor gets inconsistent. You either forget or track it at wildly different times, which messes with the streak psychology. Another case: if the habit itself requires you to be fully conscious — like journaling, meditation, or a workout — and you try to track it before doing it, you’re basically putting the cart miles ahead of the horse. You end up with a checked box and no real action.

Also if you have kids or a partner who need things from you the moment your eyes open, “immediately after waking” is not under your control. That’s a setup for fragile streaks
