Treat it like a chlorine pool, but watch the salt cell.

Pretty much the same as a freshwater pool, with a couple extra steps.

Balance the water first: pH around 7.2, alkalinity 80-120, calcium over 200. Add a winterizing algaecide and phosphate remover — saltwater pools still grow algae. Lower the water level to six inches below the skimmer. Blow out the return lines and main drain, plug them, and pour in non-toxic antifreeze (the pink stuff).

The only real difference is the salt cell. Remove it from the plumbing, clean it if it’s crusty, and store it in a dry place. Don’t leave it in the line over winter — ice can crack it. Also, don’t drain the pool unless you live somewhere that sees -30°F for weeks. A little ice on top is fine; an empty pool can pop out of the ground.

One more thing: turn off the salt generator at the breaker. No point having it hum all winter.

Your salt cell will thank you.
