Treat windburn like a light sunburn
Windburn is basically a mild version of sunburn — the wind strips your skin’s protective oils, so you need to hydrate and soothe, not peel or scrub.
Start with a gentle cleanse using lukewarm water and a non-foaming, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry. Then apply a thick, bland moisturizer — something with ceramides, shea butter, or aloe. If it stings, switch to something simpler like petroleum jelly or Aquaphor. A cool compress also helps if your face feels hot.
What to avoid immediately: hot water, exfoliators (physical or chemical), alcohol-based toners, and any product with fragrance or acids. No picking at flakes — you’ll damage the barrier further. And skip the retinols or vitamin C until your skin calms down.
Your face will bounce back in a day or two if you stop treating it like a battlefield.
