Treat wood lunch boxes like cast iron: wash fast, dry fast, oil after

Wood and bamboo lunch boxes need a quick hand wash with mild soap and warm water, then dry immediately and rub on a little mineral oil. That’s the whole secret. They’re not like plastic or metal, where you can just toss them in the dishwasher and forget about it.

Wood and bamboo are porous. Soaking them or running them through the dishwasher makes them absorb water, which leads to warping, cracking, and a musty smell that never quite goes away. So keep it short: wipe out loose crumbs, wash the whole thing with a soft sponge and a drop of mild dish soap in warm water, then rinse and dry with a towel right away. Let it finish air-drying completely before you put the lid on or store it.

If odors are already lingering, sprinkle baking soda inside and let it sit overnight, then rinse and dry. A rub with lemon juice or white vinegar also works, just make sure you rinse it off. Avoid olive or coconut oil for conditioning — they can go rancid. Use food-grade mineral oil or a beeswax block, applied sparingly when the box is fully dry. That keeps the wood sealed and less likely to trap smells.

Do this right and your lunch box will actually look better and last longer than a dishwashed one.
