A trunk with a lid and a toy rotation system is the best way to keep a small living room from turning into a toy explosion. It works because you’re hiding the mess and limiting what’s available at the same time.

Here’s the trick: the trunk is not the main toy bin. It’s the vault. You store the rest of the toys somewhere else — a closet, under a bed, in the garage. The trunk holds only the current rotation (maybe 8-12 toys, depending on size). When the kids get bored, you swap them out. The lid hides everything instantly for when adults come over.

Maintenance is simple, but you have to be ruthless. Every time you swap, purge broken or outgrown toys. Don’t let the trunk become a black hole of random junk. If it’s full of stuff nobody plays with, the system fails.

The hardest part is keeping yourself from buying more toys than the trunk can hold. That’s the point. If it doesn’t fit, you don’t need it.
