Two covers, not one.

You need two separate pool covers — one for safety and one for heat retention. No single cover does both well.

Solar covers (those bubbly blue sheets) are great for heat. They float on the water, trap sunlight, and cut evaporation. But they’re flimsy. A child or pet could fall through them. They’re not safety covers.

Safety covers are heavy-duty mesh or solid vinyl that anchor into the deck. They can support a person’s weight. But they don’t do much for heat because they sit above the water and let heat escape through the gaps or the material.

If you have kids or pets, buy a safety cover for winter and a solar cover for summer. If you only care about heating your pool and have no drowning risk, skip the safety cover. But don’t pretend the solar cover is safe — it isn’t.

Spend the money on both. Future you will be glad.
