Upgrading RAM barely touches battery life.
No. Not enough to matter. The battery impact from adding more RAM is tiny—we’re talking single-digit percentage differences, usually less than 2-3%.
RAM itself uses very little power compared to the CPU, display, and wireless radios. A typical stick of laptop DDR4 or DDR5 draws maybe 2-5 watts under load and much less at idle. Adding a second stick or upgrading capacity doesn’t suddenly double that—it’s still within the same ballpark.
Soldered vs. socketed? Soldered RAM can be slightly more power-efficient because the memory controller can manage each chip directly, and there’s no physical connector to add resistance. But the difference is basically invisible in real-world use. A well-designed socketed laptop performs just as well on battery. The real reason manufacturers solder RAM is to save space and build thinner laptops—not to save you battery life.
If you’re worried about runtime, worry about screen brightness and background apps instead. That’s where you’ll actually see a difference.
