Use a heavy-gauge, short extension cord for well pumps

No, you cannot use a standard household extension cord with a submersible well pump.

Well pumps draw a big startup surge — sometimes 2–3 times their running amps. A cheap 16-gauge cord will cause voltage drop, overheat, and possibly burn out your pump motor.

Use at least 12-gauge for a 15-amp pump, and step up to 10-gauge if the run is over 25 feet. Must be three-wire grounded, outdoor rated, and kept as short as possible. If you’re wiring a permanent installation, hardwire it per code. Extension cords are for temporary testing only.

A well pump isn’t a lamp. Don’t cut corners
