Use a weekly chain for variable frequency goals
For a Q1 goal you need to do four times a week, don’t try to chain every day—chain each week instead.
The classic “don’t break the chain” works great when you’re doing something daily. But when your target is “4 times per week,” a daily chain punishes you on your rest days. You’ll feel like you’re failing even when you’re ahead. That’s a fast track to quitting.
Better approach: draw a grid with seven boxes per week. Mark off the days you actually do the thing. At the end of the week, if you hit four, color in the whole week. Your chain is consecutive weeks where you hit your target, not consecutive days.
This way you can have an off-day (or three) without guilt. The chain still survives as long as you get your four in. You can even frontload or backload the week as your schedule allows.
