Use clear bins by meal zone, not by food group

The most effective way is to group items by how you use them (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks) rather than by type (dairy, produce, condiments), and do a 5‑minute Sunday inventory.

Here’s why the “meal zone” method works better in a small fridge: you grab everything you need for a single meal from one bin. No rummaging. No “where’s the cheese?” Clear bins let you see everything at a glance, but if you sort by type you’ll still be hunting through three different bins to make a sandwich. Group by purpose – breakfast stuff together, lunch stuff together, dinner ingredients together. That’s the real declutter.

The weekly inventory is just a sticky note on the door. Every Sunday (or whatever day works), pull out each bin, toss anything past its prime, and write down what’s in there. You’ll stop buying duplicate jars of salsa and actually use that half‑bag of spinach. Keep it to five minutes. Longer than that and you’ll skip it.

The combination works because bins enforce boundaries and the inventory prevents the fridge from becoming a science experiment. It’s not complicated.

Your fridge will stop being a black hole – and you’ll finally stop finding that one container of hummus from 2022.
