Use magnetic tape or virtual walls for older Roombas.
You need a physical barrier. Older Roombas without app support don’t have digital no-go zones, but they do have other ways to keep them out of trouble.
Most older models (like the 500, 600, and 700 series) came with virtual wall units. Those little hockey puck things emit an invisible IR beam. Place one in a doorway or across a threshold and the Roomba won’t cross it. Works great for keeping it out of a messy area or away from cords. If you lost yours, replacements are cheap on eBay.
If your model doesn’t support virtual walls—or you want something more permanent—try magnetic tape. Some Roombas respond to a strong magnetic strip laid on the floor. (Check your model: 600 and 700 series typically work.) Just tape it down and the Roomba treats it like a cliff. It’s janky but effective.
Worst case, close the door or block the path with a box. Not elegant, but free.
No app needed, just a strip of tape or a plastic puck.
