Use the over-door organizer for daily drivers, the bench cubbies for seasonal storage.
The most effective technique is to split your shoes by frequency of use — the over-door organizer holds your current rotation, and the bench cubbies store everything else.
Here’s the logic: a slim over-the-door organizer is great for visibility and quick access. You can see every pair at a glance. It’s terrible for bulky shoes or stuff you only wear once a month. So fill it with your 3-5 most-worn pairs. Work shoes, sneakers, the slip-ons you grab for errands. That keeps the floor clear and your morning routine fast.
The bench cubbies are deeper and usually hidden behind a lid or under a cushion. Perfect for out-of-season shoes, dress shoes you wear to weddings, or hiking boots that take up too much room in the fabric organizer. Use the cubbies as long-term storage — one pair per cubby, or stack sandals if you must. But don’t mix daily shoes with storage shoes in the same spot. That’s how you end up with a mess again.
If you only have a small collection, this system means every shoe has a home and you never have to dig through a pile. The bench stays clear enough to actually sit on, and the over-door holder doesn’t bulge like it’s about to tear.
