Use vacuum bags and a labeled system

Vacuum compression bags with clear labels are the best way to store seasonal clothes under your bed. They cut bulk by 50–80%, keep dust and moisture out, and make swapping seasons take ten minutes instead of an hour.

A few tricks: measure the gap between floor and bed frame first. Most vacuum bags flatten to about 2–3 inches, but if your bed is low, some bags won’t fit after compression. Get the roll-up kind (no vacuum needed) for easier access. Add a silica gel pack or two inside each bag if your apartment has any humidity. Then label each bag with a permanent marker on a masking tape strip — “Winter sweaters,” “Summer shorts” — not just the season, but the actual contents. Stack them flat, heaviest on bottom.

Don’t try to organize by color or fold perfectly. The goal is quick seasonal swaps, not a museum. One bag per category. If you can’t fit it all, you probably own too much of that season.

Future you will appreciate not digging through five bags to find a swimsuit in July.
