Used 8GB sticks are a solid upgrade
Yes, if you match the specs carefully.
Used RAM is one of the few components I’d buy secondhand without much worry. It’s simple, doesn’t wear out like a hard drive, and prices are usually half of new. For upgrading from 8GB to 16GB, a used stick is great value.
The risk is compatibility. You need the same generation (DDR3/4/5), same speed, same timings, and ideally the same brand or at least same chips. Mixing mismatched sticks can cause crashes or simply not boot. Also, no warranty – if it’s dead on arrival, you eat the cost.
Buy from a seller with good feedback. Test with MemTest86 as soon as you get it. If it passes, you’re golden. If not, file a claim fast.
Future you gets a snappier multitasking machine for pocket change. Just don’t cheap out on a sketchy listing.
