UV-damaged extension cords feel stiff and crackly.

Look for stiffness, surface cracking, and faded or chalky color.

UV light breaks down the plasticizers in cord insulation, making it brittle. The first sign is usually the cord feeling noticeably stiffer than it used to. Bend it — if fine cracks appear at the bend points, the insulation is failing. Faded or chalky-looking outer jacket is another giveaway, especially on cords that spent summers in direct sun.

Don’t trust a cord that’s gone stiff or shows cracks. The insulation can split open under load, exposing wires. Replace it — outdoor-rated cords with UV-resistant jackets exist for a reason.

If it feels like cheap plastic that’s been left in a car dashboard, it’s time to retire it.
