Variable-speed pool pumps are worth the upfront cost.

Yes, they are.

Single-speed pumps run at full blast all the time. Variable-speed pumps let you dial in exactly the flow you need for filtering, heating, or running a cleaner. That means you use less electricity — a lot less. Most people cut their pump energy use by 50-80% after switching. In many areas, rebates and utility incentives cover a big chunk of the price difference, so the payback period is under two years.

They’re also quieter. A variable-speed pump at low speed sounds like a gentle hum instead of a roar. And you get more control — you can run the pump longer at low speed (which filters better anyway) without racking up the bill.

The only downside is the higher purchase price, but that’s an investment, not a cost. If you’re replacing a dead pump or building a new pool, don’t even consider single-speed. Most places have banned new single-speed installations anyway.

Your electric bill and your ears will both thank you.
