Single-speed pumps run at full blast all the time, which is like driving your car everywhere in first gear. Variable-speed pumps let you run low flow for daily filtration (uses way less electricity) and high flow only when you need it (backwashing, running a heater, water features). Most utilities even offer rebates for swapping to variable-speed because the power draw is so much lower.
They’re also quieter and last longer because they’re not always running at max RPM. The only reason to stick with single-speed is if your budget is truly tight and you won’t own the house long enough to recoup the savings. Otherwise, make the switch.
