Variable-speed pumps are the only choice.
Yes. For 2025, there’s no reason to buy anything but a variable-speed pool pump. Single-speed models are basically obsolete — they waste power and many jurisdictions are phasing them out anyway.
Variable-speed pumps let you run the pump at lower speeds for daily filtration, using a fraction of the electricity. High speed is only needed for cleaning or heating cycles. The savings are real: you’ll cut your pump energy use by 50-80%.
The top brands are Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy. Pentair’s IntelliFlo line has been the gold standard for years — reliable, smart, and now with Wi-Fi control built in on most models. Hayward’s TriStar VS and Jandy’s ePump are also excellent. The real difference is in your controller compatibility. If you already have a Pentair automation system, stick with Pentair. Same for Hayward or Jandy. If you’re starting from scratch, any of them work fine.
Don’t bother with “energy-efficient” single-speed pumps. They’re marketing gimmicks. Variable-speed is the only way to save real money.
Pick the pump that matches your pool size and existing equipment, not the cheapest one. The install cost is higher, but it pays back in a year or two of reduced electric bills.
