Vinegar and sun will fix your backpack
A mildew-smelling backpack is fixable with a vinegar soak and a long spell in direct sun. You don’t need to throw it out.
The smell is mold growing in the fabric, so the goal is kill the mold, not just mask the smell. Start by emptying every pocket and pulling out any removable padding or frame sheets. Give it a good brush to knock off dry mold spores — do this outside, not in your living room.
Mix one part white vinegar with three parts water. If the backpack is machine washable, run it on a gentle cycle with that mixture plus a splash of regular detergent. If it’s not washable, fill a spray bottle with the vinegar solution and saturate the whole bag, inside and out. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes, then rinse with clean water.
Now the step everyone skips: dry it in direct sunlight. UV light kills mold spores, and a full day in the sun does more than any spray. Make sure it’s completely dry before you store it again — even a little dampness brings the smell right back. If the odor lingers after it’s dry, repeat the vinegar treatment once. For really stubborn cases, an enzyme cleaner like Nature’s Miracle works well.
The sun is the magic ingredient — don’t skip it.
