Virtual walls solve the Christmas tree tangle problem.

Yes. Set up a virtual wall or no-go zone around the tree base, about 2–3 feet out, to keep the vacuum from ever reaching the lights or trunk.

Most robot vacuums let you draw a “no-go” zone in the app. Use that to create a circle around the tree where the vacuum simply won’t go. If your model doesn’t have that, use the physical magnetic boundary strips that came with it (or buy some third-party ones). The goal is to give the vacuum a buffer so it never gets close enough to suck up a loose wire or wind itself in a light strand.

I’d also make sure the lights are tucked up at least a few inches off the floor—even with a virtual wall, a dangling wire is an invitation. But the real fix is stopping the vacuum from even seeing the tree base. That way it cleans the room without ever touching the tree.

Your robot will thank you, and you won’t spend Christmas morning untangling it from a 12-foot string of twinkle lights.
