Visual cues are your only option for pool metal testing without strips.

You can’t measure exact metal levels without test strips or a lab — but you can spot the signs.

Look at your pool surfaces and water color. Orange or rust stains? That’s iron. Blue-green stains? Copper. Brown or black staining? Manganese. Cloudy water that turns clear after adding shock can also point to metals like copper or iron.

These visual clues tell you that metals are present, but not how much. That matters because treatment depends on concentration — low levels you can sequester, high levels need chelation or dilution.

If you’re just trying to figure out why your pool is staining, these signs are enough. If you need precise numbers for a treatment plan, you’re better off grabbing a strip or taking a sample to the pool store.
