Voodoo Lounge: The Rolling Stones' First Album to Debut at No. 1 on Both Sides of the Atlantic

In 1994, the Rolling Stones achieved a chart milestone that had eluded them for three decades: Voodoo Lounge became the first album in the band’s history to debut at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart simultaneously. It also marked their first studio album without guitarist Bill Wyman, who had left in 1993.

The album was recorded in Ireland and produced by Don Was, with the band leaning into a rootsier, blues-rock sound after the more modern gloss of Steel Wheels. While it produced the hit “Love Is Strong,” it’s probably best remembered for the stadium tour that followed—one of the highest-grossing tours of the 1990s. The chart double-debut was a statement: even in their third decade, the Stones could still claim new ground.
