Washing a speed mousepad is safe; control pads are trickier.

Yes, you can wash most mousepads to restore some feel, but it works better for speed pads than control pads.

Speed pads (hard or smooth cloth) rely on a uniform, low-friction surface. Dirt, grease, and dead skin turn them into mud. A gentle wash with mild soap, cold water, and air drying brings back a lot of the original glide. Don’t scrub or use hot water—you’ll damage the coating.

Control pads are rougher and porous. Washing can remove dirt, but you might lose some of the deliberate texture if you scrub too hard. The grip comes from the surface structure, not just cleanliness. If you wear down that texture over time, washing won’t bring it back.

The rule of thumb: wash gently, let it air dry completely, and know that wear is permanent. If the pad is old and frayed, just buy a new one.
