Watermelon juice is a lunch box crime. Use silicone cups.

The real fix is to put the juicy stuff in a separate small cup or liner that actually seals, not just a paper one.

Paper muffin liners are a trap. They soak through in an hour and then everything tastes like watermelon and everything smells like watermelon. Silicone muffin cups are the move. They’re flexible, reusable, and they sit snugly in the compartment so juice stays where it belongs. You can use the same little cups for yogurt, berries, or chopped peaches.

If you’re packing sliced watermelon, another trick is to drain it first. Pat the slices with a paper towel or let them sit on a plate for a minute. It is shocking how much juice comes off. That alone stops most of the seepage.

And since we’re here: don’t rely on a compartment lid that snaps in. Those are rarely leakproof. If you need to be absolutely sure, pack the juicy thing in a tiny leakproof container and put that container in the lunch box. It takes thirty seconds and saves you from cleaning a disaster at noon.

Future lunch box, happier you.
