The difference between a cheap robot and a decent one often comes down to this. Good obstacle avoidance spots a phone cable, a shoe, or a pet toy and steers around it instead of dragging it across the room or getting tangled. Cameras and laser sensors do the seeing; the software decides what to avoid.
