Wheelchair-accessible islands are rare.

Generally, no.

Most islands were built long before accessibility was a concern. Think cobblestone streets, narrow sidewalks, steep hills, and stairs to every beach. Even the “accessible” ferry routes often require a call ahead and a crew member to haul you up a ramp that doesn’t really fit.

That said, a handful of places do it well. Singapore’s Sentosa, some Balinese resort islands, and a few Greek islands (like Rhodes) have put in real work. But “accessible through the islands” — meaning hopping between them with a wheelchair — is still a logistical nightmare. Ferries are inconsistent, rental scooters are rare, and you’ll be calling ahead for everything.

If you’re planning a trip, pick one island that’s confirmed accessible and stay there. Island-hopping is for the able-bodied.
