Whole Lotta Love has Page's theremin.
Whole Lotta Love, from Led Zeppelin II. That’s the one.
If you’ve heard the song — and you have — you know the middle section. That wobbly, psychedelic noise that sounds like a spaceship malfunction? That’s Jimmy Page playing a theremin. He also used it during live performances of the song, but the studio version on Led Zeppelin II (1969) is where it lives immortal.
It’s the band’s only prominent studio theremin moment, unless you count the brief squeals on “How Many More Times” (also on that album), but those are more likely a violin bow on guitar strings. The theremin earned its keep on “Whole Lotta Love.”
That track alone justifies the album’s reputation.
