Why Nick Mason Formed Saucerful of Secrets and Whether They Wrote Original Songs

Nick Mason didn’t start Saucerful of Secrets just for fun – he genuinely believed Pink Floyd’s early psychedelic years deserved a live revival that the rest of the band had long abandoned. After Waters left and Gilmour shifted toward later-era epics, the pre-Dark Side material sat in the vaults. Mason wanted to give that catalog a proper stage again.

The band – including Gary Kemp, Lee Harris, Guy Pratt, and Dom Beken – stayed strictly archival. They never released any original studio material. Their only official album is a live recording, Live at the Roundhouse (2020), which captures their set of covers from Floyd’s Syd Barrett and early Gilmour years. Mason has said the project is purely about celebrating the music he helped create, not writing new chapters.
