The band couldn’t get a drum kit to sound right in the tiny room they were using – so they gave up on professional gear and literally plugged a mono Philips cassette recorder into the mixing desk. The result? A distorted, compressed snare that sounded like a revolutionary fuse being lit.

Keith Richards also played his acoustic guitar through a small, overdriven amplifier to get that chugging, almost electric tone. The cassette recorder’s limited frequency range and natural compression gave the whole track a frayed, urgent energy that fit the 1968 riots vibe perfectly.
