Wide mouth is the only way to carry soup

The best thing for taking soup to work is a wide-mouth vacuum food jar, and the Thermos Stainless King is the one I’d buy.

Narrow thermoses are built for drinking, not eating. You can’t get a spoon in them, they’re annoying to fill, and they’re hell to clean after a cream soup. A wide-mouth jar solves all that. The tradeoff is that you can’t sip from it, but you don’t sip soup.

Leaks are about the lid, not the shape. Any good thermos has a threaded lid with a silicone gasket, and that gasket is your only barrier. Keep it clean, make sure it’s seated right, and don’t overfill — leave a little room so pressure doesn’t work against the seal. Test it upside down over the sink before you leave and you’re safe.

Zojirushi holds heat noticeably longer and is lighter, but its lid has more parts to wash. The Thermos Stainless King is cheaper, simpler, and basically indestructible. If you only buy one, that’s it.

Your soup deserves better than a leaky deli container.
