Winter access is possible but not guaranteed.

It depends on ice conditions. The Three Sisters Islands (on the American side of Niagara Falls) are connected by pedestrian footbridges. The park itself is open year-round, but those bridges can close when ice builds up and makes them dangerous.

The park authorities don’t shut them down preemptively for the whole season — they close them when conditions warrant. That usually happens during or after freezing rain, heavy snow followed by thaw, or when ice chunks pile up on the river and push against the bridges.

If you’re planning a trip, check the Niagara Falls State Park Twitter or call the visitor center the morning of. No one wants to walk a mile in the cold only to find a locked gate.

You’ll likely get to walk out there, but don’t bet the day on it.
