Winter Niagara Falls is worth it, but it's a different trip.

Yes, the park stays open in January, but you are not getting the full summer experience. And that’s fine — maybe better, depending on what you want.

Summer means crowds, long lines, and the full slate: Maid of the Mist (boat ride), Cave of the Winds (walk behind the falls), and the observation tower. You’ll need patience and a parking spot.

Winter means the park itself is open 365 days — paths, viewing areas, the visitor center, and the aquarium are all running. But the boat and Cave of the Winds shut down around late October/November and don’t reopen until spring. The falls themselves don’t freeze solid, but the mist turns everything into a frozen wonderland. Fewer people, shorter lines, and the same roaring water. Just colder.

Bundle up. The winds off the gorge are brutal. And if you want the boat, plan for warmer months. But if you want to see the falls with icicles on the railing and hardly any tourists, January is actually great.
