Winter vitamin C needs a buffer

Stinging in winter usually means your skin barrier is struggling with the cold, so you need to dial back actives or sandwich the vitamin C between moisturizer layers.

Cold air, wind, and indoor heating all wreck your moisture barrier. That thin protective film gets compromised way easier in winter, making your face more reactive to anything acidic — and vitamin C is acidic (pH around 3–4). Even if you tolerated it fine all summer, January might feel like acid splash.

The fix is simple: don’t use it every day. Try every other day, or even every third day. And never layer it with other strong actives on the same day — no retinol, no BHA/AHA, no high-concentration niacinamide. If you must multitask, do vitamin C in the morning and the other active at night, with a hydrating rest day in between.

Also try the buffer method: wash your face, apply a light moisturizer first, let it sink in for 2 minutes, then
