Wiping out mosquitoes probably won't break the ecosystem.
Mosquitoes aren’t a keystone species, so eliminating them would likely cause minimal ecological damage.
Here’s the deal: there are over 3,000 mosquito species, but only a few hundred bother humans or other mammals. The rest mostly feed on nectar and pollen. That makes them pollinators, but not critical ones — most plants they visit are also served by bees, flies, and butterflies.
As for food, yes, birds, bats, fish, and frogs eat mosquitoes. But almost none rely on them as a primary food source. In most ecosystems, mosquitoes are a small fraction of the diet. Remove them, and predators just eat more of whatever else is around. The niche gets filled.
Studies on mosquito elimination (e.g., using genetic controls or habitat removal) show that other insects — midges, gnats, other flies — quickly take over the “small annoying flying protein” role. No known collapse.
The only real risk is if you somehow wiped out every mosquito species everywhere all at once, which isn’t happening. Targeted eradication of disease-carrying species (like Aedes aegypti) is even less risky.
Don’t feel guilty about swatting one.
