Wish You Were Here: Pink Floyd's First Album to Debut at Number One on the UK Albums Chart

Despite The Dark Side of the Moon eventually becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time, it actually entered the UK chart at number two. That distinction of being Pink Floyd’s first studio album to debut at the top spot belongs to its follow-up, Wish You Were Here.

Released on 12 September 1975, Wish You Were Here entered the UK Albums Chart at number one on 27 September. It held the position for one week before being knocked down by John Lennon’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, but its achievement marked a turning point for the band – they had finally become an instant chart-topping act at home, not just a slow-burning phenomenon.
