Wrap the ice pack in a towel

Wrapping your ice pack in a towel or dishcloth is the simplest fix for the puddle of condensation that ends up on your desk.

The condensation forms because warm, humid air inside the lunch bag hits the cold surface of the ice pack, and the moisture condenses into water that drips off. A cloth absorbs that water before it can pool anywhere. Just fold a dish towel around the pack, or if your lunch bag has a non-waterproof bottom, lay a folded towel flat underneath to catch whatever runs off.

The slightly better long-term move: freeze a water bottle instead of using a gel pack. It cools just as well, the condensation stays on the bottle, and you get a cold drink with lunch. Plus a frozen bottle dries off fast and never leaks gel. Same physics, but the bottle handles the wetness better.

If you’re stuck with the gel pack, a ziplock baggie around it will contain the drips, but then you’re dealing with a wet, annoying baggie at noon. A towel you just toss in the wash.

Your desk deserves better than a puddle.
