Most inhabited islands with any history have something — old forts, stone bridges, abandoned settlements. The question is whether they’re worth a detour or just a five-minute photo stop.

If you’re thinking of a specific archipelago (Greek, Caribbean, South Pacific), do a quick search for “historic ruins on [island group]” or check Google Maps for “historic site” markers. Some islands have well-preserved colonial architecture or ancient ruins; others have a single crumbling church from the 1800s and little else.

Old bridges are rarer unless the island had significant trade or military routes. Ruins are more common — think old sugar mills, lighthouses, or fortress walls.

Skip the ones that require a four-hour hike unless you’re really into ruins. The photo opportunity is usually not worth the sunburn.
