Yes, but only if it's plain, unscented, and additive-free.

Household bleach and pool chlorine are both sodium hypochlorite. The difference is concentration. Pool chlorine is usually 10-12%, while most household bleach is around 6-8.25%. Additives like thickeners, scents, or “splash-less” polymers can mess with your pool chemistry or leave residue you don’t want.

If you’re in a real emergency and need to sanitize pool water, check the label. It should say “sodium hypochlorite” and nothing else. No “outdoor fresh scent.” No “cloromax.” Just bleach and water.

Then you have to do the math. A rough rule: 8 oz of 6% bleach per 1000 gallons raises chlorine by about 0.5 ppm. Adjust from there. Don’t just dump a whole bottle in.

So yes, it works. But grab the cheapest generic unscented bleach you can find. That’s what counts.

Also, never mix with other pool chemicals. And test the water after. You’re better off using proper pool chlorine, but if the store’s out, the bleach aisle works in a pinch.
