A hot air rework station ($80–$150) is mandatory. Soldering iron alone won’t cut it — you need controlled airflow to desolder the old RAM chip and solder the new one without torching the board. Add solder paste ($10), flux ($8), tweezers ($5), and maybe a preheater ($40–$60) for multi-layer boards. If you don’t already own a microscope or good magnifying lamp, add $50–$100. You’re looking at $150–$350 total before you even buy the RAM chip.
But here’s the catch: you also need to source the exact compatible RAM module (not always easy), program the SPI flash if the board locks memory configuration, and have the skill to hand-solder BGA packages without bridging balls. One slip and the motherboard is toast.
If you’re asking, you probably shouldn’t. Pay a repair shop $100–$200 to do it, or just buy a laptop with upgradeable RAM next time.
