You need a weekly outbox for your entryway

The simplest way to keep a small entryway from turning into a landfill is to have a designated outbox that you clear every Sunday.

Here’s the thing about small entryways: they’re magnets for “I’ll deal with this later” stuff. Mail, kid’s shoes, a jacket that doesn’t belong, random bags, that thing you need to return. Before you know it, the whole area is a pile you have to step over.

The fix is stupidly simple. Get a basket, bin, or any container that fits your space. Call it the outbox. Everything that doesn’t belong in the entryway goes in there immediately. No sorting, no deciding, no “I’ll put it away in a minute.” Just toss it in.

Then pick one day a week — Sunday evening works great — and deal with everything in the outbox. Takes five minutes. Mail gets sorted, shoes go to the right closet, that jacket goes back to the bedroom. You’re done.

The magic is that you never let the entryway itself become the holding area. The outbox is the holding area. And since you clear it weekly, it never gets out of control. Your entryway stays clean because the clutter has a temporary home that also gets emptied.

This is not where you save six bucks by using a random cardboard box. Get something that looks decent. You’ll look at it and feel like you have your life together.
